Olney Model Railway Club History

2006

The accommodation situation remained unresolved as internal politics and issues within the OWMC delayed the preparation of any potential planning permission application. Eagles View remained in-situ to enable Club Members to run their N Gauge stock. Work on the construction of a multi-gauge (O, OO and N) continuous-run test track facility began in earnest and, by the end of the year, all the woodwork was completed and good progress had been made laying the track work. We decided that we would have 1 x O gauge, 2 x OO gauge and 2 x N gauge circuits. Once work on the test track facility had started, the decision was taken to dispose of Ravenswood Junction and the layout was duly dismantled and scrapped. Work on Eastwood Yard continued and the layout was exhibited at Lavendon in June and at our own event in September.

A large continuous-run N gauge layout, Townley Mine, was donated to the Club and it was decided that this would be stored until we had the time and resources to look at it further. The 9th OMRC Exhibition was held in the Concert Room of the Olney Working Mens Club (OWMC) on 2 September and proved to be a very successful day with a resulting profit of £344.99. Layouts exhibited were:

  • Jubilee Sidings (EM) - Dave Tailby

  • Mepham (OO) – Dale Gillard

  • Gasworks Row (EM) – Brian Wakeling

  • Eastgate (EM) – Les Williams

  • Hochstein (HO) – David O’Rourke

  • The Jetty (OO) – Mike Wilkinson

  • The Sivertown Light Railway (O) – Geoff Blackwell

  • Thomas & Friends (OO) – Olney MRC

  • Eastwood Yard (OO) – Olney MRC

2007

The year began badly with the sudden and unexpected death of our Chairman, and one of the founder members of the Club, Mick Gibson. Mick had been Chairman of the Club since its formation in 1993 and his passing was a very sad time for us all. Another devastating blow came in March when we received notification from the OWMC to vacate our Clubroom by the end of May to enable them to proceed with a planning application for redevelopment of the block. An EGM was held and we began another search for alternative accommodation. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find an alternative home at such short notice and we requested a stay of execution from the OWMC. Fortunately, following discussions with the OWMC, we were able to secure a rolling three month tenancy agreement at an annualised cost of £43.33 per month plus reimbursement of the quarterly electricity supply costs, with effect from 01 June 2007. In order to cover these additional costs, it was agreed at a second EGM that each Member would pay, in addition to the Annual Subscription, £1.50 per Thursday evening visit. Eagles View was dismantled and sold to OMRC Member, Ritchie Dixon. Work on the test track facility was completed with the resulting provision of 1 x O Gauge circuit, 2 x OO Gauge circuits and 2 x N Gauge circuits. Consideration was give to converting Eastwood Yard to DCC operation but no firm decision was made. Townley Mine remained stored pending a decision as to its future. The 10th OMRC Exhibition was held in the Concert Room of the Olney Working Mens Club (OWMC) on 01 September and proved to be a very successful day with a resulting profit of £381.70. Layouts exhibited were:

  • Saxlingham (EM) - Dave Tailby

  • Middlewood (OO) - Les Williams

  • Roadwater (EM) - Stephen Walker

  • Witts End (OO) - Peter Marler

  • Jaramike (OO) - Mike Wilkinson

  • Townend (O) - Geoff Blackwell

  • Tolethorpe (OO) - Ken Knowles

  • Magna Park (N) - Harold Dunkley

2008

Yet another year was tinged with sadness when Club stalwart, Ron Harding, lost his battle with Cancer early in the year. The death of a second Club Member within two years was a considerable blow to morale and as a consequence, it was decided to cancel the proposed 2008 Exhibition as a tribute to Ron and Mick Gibson. After careful consideration, it was decided not to proceed with the conversion of Eastwood Yard to DCC working and the layout was dismantled with a view to designing and building a new OO Gauge fine scale replacement. Townley Mine remained in storage pending a decision as to its future. Work commenced on a new, as yet unnamed N gauge, exhibition standard layout.

2009

After two relatively eventful years, 2009 turned out to be a year of consolidation. Townley Mine remained in storage, the test track facility was extended to provide an inglenook-style shunting facility for the O gauge circuit and work continued on two new, as yet unnamed, exhibition layouts in OO and N gauges. The 11th OMRC Exhibition was held in the Concert Room of the Olney Working Mens Club (OWMC) on 12 September and proved to be a very successful day with a resulting profit of £159.46. Layouts exhibited were:

  • Burton Parva (N) - Peter Johnston

  • Warmington (N) - Mick Wooldridge

  • Havnegade (HO) - David Beighton

  • St. Judes Dock (EM) - Brian Wakeling

  • Melstock (O) - John Hutchinson

  • New Layout (OO) - OMRC

  • New Layout (N) - OMRC

2010

Another year of consolidation. No decision was taken in respect of Townley Mine, but work continued apace on the now named new layouts under construction, Market Cross (N) and Bridge End (OO). The test track facility was fully completed and started to be utilised on a weekly basis by Members keen to run their own personal rolling stock. The 12th OMRC Exhibition was held in the Concert Room of the Olney Working Mens Club (OWMC) on 11 September and proved to be a very successful day with a resulting profit of £150.77.  Layouts exhibited were:

  • Ffodos Treacle Works (O) - Colin French

  • Westbridge (O) - Adan Witt

  • Trevanna Dries (EM) - Dave Tailby

  • Rosneath (N) - Peter Johnston

  • Blackwell Bridge (O) - Geoff Blackwell

  • Billingham Street (O) - Les Williams

  • The Fishley Light Railway (009) - Jack Garbett

  • Bridge End (OO) - OMRC
